CELEBRATION OF LANGUAGE, FRIENDS, EXERCISING, and JUDAISM

it feels like i haven’t written to you in AGES! ok maybe that’s because i haven’t, but i’ve been a busy girl and my internet SUCKS. alright. well. now’s the hard part remembering what i need to tell you! warning: I hope you have at least 20 minutes to dedicate to reading this novel.

i MUST start first with the splendor of my italian class. our teacher, annalisa. a complete doll. you could swear we were i bambini speciale by the way she speaks to us, or maybe we’re just kindergartners. anyway, she is just so vibrant and expressive and speaks SLOOOOWWLLYY so we can comprehend her, and sometimes when she knows we don’t understand something, she’ll just ramble on and on in rapid-fire italian about how it doesn’t matter (non importa) and everything is ok (va bene, va bene), and she makes sure to give us our 20 minute “pausa” every day, and we are reading a book about a girl whose mother is thought to be a witch, and i can’t forget to mention our field trip to the harold acton library (gorgeous library on the other side of the arno) after which we went for gelato, and after our persistent begging she brought her stereo in, and we’ve been learning italian songs! i mean this is definitely adding up to a kindergarten class, no? nap time, story time, snack time, and nursery rhymes? yeah, copenhagen. what’s that about 5000-word essays every week? oh wait. mom’s reading this. err… uhh… yeah.. so… i mean… well gotta go write my 10,000 word dissertation about the effect of machiavelli’s “the prince” on the architecture of modern-day italy… in italian. talk to you later!

okayyy that was awkward.

fine. i’ll continue. don’t judge me that i’m in kindergarten in college. it’s fine. really.

ok what happened these past few weeks? oh! sarah’s (that’s my roommate btw in case you forgot) birthday happened! age 20!! in the land where children consume alcohol at age 2… big whoop. nevertheless, for her big two-oh, the boys downstairs made her a very lovely dinner, while the rest of us decided to try out aperitivos (aka buy one drink for 7 euro and get a “free” buffet of appetizers. aka look like a fatso going up 5 times to refill the miniature plate.) my drink of choice: bellini. yeah mom. a real bellini. i’m just trying to make you a liiitle jealous. nothing a trip to trader giotto’s can’t fix though, right? haha. very chill evening. now off to the red garter for the “beach” party. remember the foam party? well this was a pretty lame attempt at a beach party. i’m sorry. pouring sand around the bar does not constitute a beach party in my book. whatever. sarah had fun, and that’s what matters most. even kiril, the guy that works in the gelato shop, showed up and bought sarah a bottle of bubbly!

saturday was the boy’s basketball tournament. the teams were mixed with italians and americans from our program and some other colleges (arkansas maybe?). sarah, jason, and i went to show our support for our neighbs (who were playing) and after they won, we started our own intense game of horse. saturday night, we just chilled out and prepped for our trip to sienna the next day.

j’adore siena! it is so ridiculous how absolutely beautiful everything in italy is. jason, christo, and i hopped on the train around 11:10. oh wait. this is a good story actually. jason “misunderstood” the train time to be 11:26 (that’s when a lot of trains we’ve taken have been leaving), so he was def lollygagging even though i TOLD him we needed to leave at a quarter of 11. christo was of course ready, waiting downstairs. we finally leave the house at 10:55 and it takes a good 20 minutes to walk to the train station. but not with me as the fearless leader! ok so we book it to the station. and by book, i mean haul some serious a**. we got to the ticket machine at 11:08:42. remember, train leaves at 11:10. ok station number punched in. one ticket. money in. get change. print ticket. x3. GO. RUN TO TRAIN. forget to validate ticket. yell at conductor: “DOVE POSSO ::hand motion of validating ticket:: [where can i ::validate::?] DOVE POSSO?! DOVE POSSO!?” jason running onto the train JUST as the doors are closing. honestly, how we haven’t missed a train already i’ll never know. but see, this is why i don’t need to exercise. stressful train-sprints = buns of steel.

phew. i’m exhausted re-reading that for typos. so we finally made it on the train and arrived in siena. bellissimo! i think i shall let pictures do the talking. but if you can ever go, DO. and let me tell you. bring the walking shoes! oh and more buns of steel conditioning to follow. see this is why you never depend on boys for directions. operation FIND THE HEAD OF SANTA CATERINA (the head of this chick that has been preserved since like the 1300s. and it lights up if you stick a euro in the box. christo has been DYING to see it). so we’ve done the 10 euro pass to see the gorgeous duomo (one of the few 100% gothic cathedrals south of the alps) and baptistry, the museo dell’opera metropolitana, the tall stone wall aqueduct-looking thing with birds-eye views of siena, the cripta, the huge piazza “il campo” and palazzo pubblico, etc. now off to search for the head. the head of santa caterina should be in the santuario di caterina, right? ok so we follow the signs (siena is very tourist-friendly= many many signs). we are just ruh-tards and miss the sign the first time. so we make a loop. then we finally see the sign and go down the correct hill. jason opts for a detour through a cool alleyway and, like idiots, we follow him. see some cool views. take some sweet pictures. decide to go down about 500 stairs. find a grotto. with fish. see a sign that says that the santuario we want is UP the hill now. the sign is kinda pointing in an odd direction, and we couldn’t really tell where we should go. i suggested we go up one way, the boys thought it was the other. outnumbered, i listened to the boys, and we ended up going up the WRONG HILL. oi vey. i present to you more buns of steel thanks to the stairmaster hill. and of course, once we find the sign again, we head back down to where our alley adventure began. JUST past this alley is the entrance to our church. only it turned out to be the WRONG church. no preserved head in there. thankfully, the church we wanted, the chiesa di san domenico, was just around the corner. church: not super impressive. head: even LESS impressive! GAH! note to self: read “LET’S GO ITALY” more carefully and DON’T EVER follow boys.

two words: MIDNIGHT (well 2:00 am actually) BAKERY. ryan, matias, beth, and i braved the streets of florence (aka walked about one block from our house) at 2:00 in the morning in the search for the secret mid-night bakery. with the trusty clues written on the wall “paste bone →” and ryan’s research, we discovered--within the frosted glass doors of the secret bakery—a plethora of midnight treats. croissants of every flavor, brownies, and other pastries. all for 1 euro! uh may zing.

there was a crazy concert in the croach (you know you love my alliteration, yeahhh) the other night. it was kindof a political rally at the same time. something about how communism is good and the mafia is bad? i don’t even know. there were a lot of hippies, but I really didn’t understand much of what was being said. a “folk” band bandabardino played. they were pretty entertaining. the piazza was packed, and it was super cool to be in the huge crowd of rowdy regazzi (people our age) as we pretended to know the lyrics and jump around and clap like real italians haha.

yesterday, we went to vada, a beach a couple hours away from firenze. getting to our desired beach was an undertaking of epic proportions. first of all, i spoke too soon about the whole not missing the train thing. (i wrote that part of this entry before saturday). so once again, i was ALLL ready to go and the boys were not. so we rushed to the train station like last time and MISSED the freakin train by literally 30 seconds. GOD i was so pissed. luckily for the boys there was a train that left 5 minutes later, but we needed to transfer onto another train along the way. so while yoanna and christo were happily on their way, we waited for our train. finally arriving in vada aka middle of nowhere, we were actually kinda glad that yoanna and christo had been the trailblazers so they could give us the rundown of the area and tell us where to go. after a 20 minute walk into town and another hour search for the beautiful white sand beaches, the boys and i arrived at lo spiaggio bianche (the white beach). SOSOSOSOSO beautiful. and worth the walk. there were wind surfers, kite surfers, clear aquamarine sea, white sand, and of course a gelato tank. how else do you think the man rolls his cart of gelato and birra? yeah mmhmm. so funny.  after a dip and a nap and some chillaxing, we journeyed back to town and to the train.

this morning, i ran (ish) a half marathon! or like 10k i guess… so not even. but me, running? now that’s a once in a lifetime occurrence, people. the event: corri la vita (run for life, breast cancer). the place(s): starting at palazzo vecchio, through to the duomo, around through piazza de la repubblica and across the arno to palazzo pitti, through the boboli gardens behind the palazzo, around and down the hills through and back around to the arno, across another ponte, down via dei neri (look up and see roommates cheering from our window), and back to the palazzo vecchio as a fanfare is playing to welcome us to the finish line!! we never looked so good in orange. did i mention that every single museum in florence was free today? yeah. we took that opportunity and visited the pitti palace. more walking is just what we needed, right?

tonight, for yom kippur, alyssa, andrianna, and i decided to be good jews (well, if you must know, alyssa is “half”-ish and andi wishes she were jewish haha) and go to services at the synagogue in town. we got all dolled up and went for dinner at ruth’s vegetarian kosher restaurant and had delishhh food for our last meal before fasting. and of course some gelato afterwards (hey i just ran a half marathon, k!). the synagogue is sephardic and orthodox aka women and men were separated. the inside of the temple was gorgeous and so was the service. however, i think i might have caught a total of 5 words: kol nidre, shechekyanu, and yit gadal. the way the rabbi was speaking hebrew was so foreign to me, and none of the melodies were similar to anything i had ever heard. i met this really nice woman from new york (she was sitting next to me) who has lived in florence for 20 years (she plays cello for the symphony of florence), and she was explaining how even her israeli orthadox sephardic friend didn’t understand this italian rabbi.  she gave me a bunch of tips on places to go eat, shop, etc.  after the service, the girls and i hung around outside watching little bambini play tag, and these two kids our age came up to us and invited us to a sukkah building in october. yeah, i’m about to get my JEW on.

ok my eyes, neck, and butt hurt from writing this/the days activities, so i’m about to pass out. buona note!!

p.s. we’re gonna pretend like i wrote this on sunday, september 27 because the internet is down and i don’t want to keep changing my “yesterdays” and “todays,” etc to make it right.

p.p.s. i’m going to milan for my birthday!!! with about 15 poeple so farrrr!! cannot wait!!!

PISA / VOLTERRA / SAN GIMIGNANO / CASTIGLIONCELLO / ETC

WARNING: CONTENTS MAY CONTAIN MATERIAL THAT IS KNOWN TO CAUSE JEALOUSY AMONGST THOSE STUCK IN DREARY OLD AMERICA

what a freaking incredible weekend. after friday’s italian quiz, we were on our way to: wait for it… wait for it… PISA. yes, ladies and gentlemen. the actual living, breathing, leaning tower. the train to pisa took about an hour and a half-ish (gin rummy anyone?) and then a 15-20 minute walk from the station past dead pigeons, sketchy streets (don’t worry, mom, we had 4 guys and it was broad daylight), and the river gets you to all the glory of the city. really unbelievable how poorly they engineered that tower. it’s got some serious issues. but i’m definitely not complaining. yes, of course we did the holding up/knocking down/ninja kicking/leaning like the tower pictures with the tower. you just have to. it’s a basic rule of being a tourist in pisa. not only is the tower incredible, but the abbey and basilica as well. gorgeous gorgeous buildings. we sat down to sketch/rest/nap in front of the tower for a good 2-3 hours.

that night, our entire building plus a few more ventured down to the red garter, a bar near santa croce, to go sing karaoke. when we got there, i was a little surprised that some people were walking from the back of the bar/club area soaking wet. apparently we had found ourselves a FOAM PARTY. although reluctant at first, i finally kicked off my shoes and joined into the ridiculousness this festa…what happened to karaoke? you honestly haven’t lived until you’e experienced a foam party. there ended up being some sort of karaoke, but the foam was definitely the piece de resistance of the evening. we were SOAKED to the bone with foam sprayed from an actual foam canon. like, are you serious? foam up to your knees pretty much. totally awesome in jeans. not. haha… but p.s. italian guys are seriously gross. i pushed (with a lot of force) at least 4 guys away from my friends and me, and we had to ask our guys to form a human barrier to protect us. ugh!

saturday was our school-planned trip to volterra, san gimignano, and casa machiavelli. after a nauseating 2-hour bus ride (note to self: don’t read on a wind-y road in a bus), we got to volterra, an etruscan town in italy (gorgeoussss views).  we took a tour of the museum which contained basically hundreds of urns and ancient vases/pots. the city is famous for their alabaster, too, and i got an alabaster ring.  from volterra, we moved on to san gimignano an hour away, famous for its towers (and gelato).  more spectacular views! the church at san gim also has amazing frescoes (they saved them with sandbags in the movie tea with mussolini). i wished we had stayed there longer though. this harpist was playing traditional italian music right next to a view area and i didn’t want to ever leave.  mach’s house was pretty sweet too… especially for being a house of exile. he really got the hook-up with his wine vault with 100 barrels of vino directly under his house. and his view of firenze wasn’t too bad either. he was a very spoiled exile.  the dinner we got was absolutely huge. crostinins with 5 different toppings (tomatoes aka bruchetta, olive tapenade spread, boursin-like cheese spread, pate, and baked salmon-y stuff), traditional florentine bready soup, chicken + ribs + sausage, potatoes, salad, and for dessert biscotti with this sweet wine stuff that no one drank.  suuuper exhausted when we got home around 11:15.

sunday, we went to the beach! castiglioncello. about 2 hours from florence via train. the weather was perfect, the water was good once you got used to it, and the town was adorable. especially the naked grandmas with their droopy boobs. hot stuff… the best thing about it was the no americans part. only italians and their families. way to be.

yesterday it STORMED. thunder and everything. every time we had to walk somewhere, though, we got super lucky and it didn’t rain on us once. perfect day for a midday cappuccino. oh wait, that’s every day.

that night, christo invited us over to have dinner with his italian/german roommates and their friends. everyone was SO nice, and we had yet another chance to practice our italian. after the landlord told us that we were being too loud, we kicked it at the croach (santa croce) and spoke in italian while the italians practiced their english. excellent evening. i do say.

arrighty. ciao. more domani maybe.

xxoo

DANCING, PEPERONI, CELEBRATIONS, CONCERTS, AND NEW FRIENDS

what a week it has been! remind me…when was the last time we spoke? oh right, saturday. crazy walk/hike/surprise ending up at michelangelo. alright. so saturday night, we finally found a place to DANCE. twice. it’s this swanky little nightclub that all the americans go to of course, but they’ve got their fair share of italians, let me tell you. none of them were remotely attractive. mostly they were just gross. and sweaty. and they just stood around all of us like vultures eyeing their prey. ignoring them was the way to go for sure. but we all had a blast DOAO (dancing our a$$es off).

sunday, yoanna, gaby, christo, kevin, and i decided to venture out to fiesole, a charming little etruscan town a half an hour bus ride from firenze. the views on the way up were incredible—even the duomo looked tiiiiny.  the five of us “window” shopped in the open air garage-sale-ish market thing, hiked around for a bit (omg views), played some dice in a park, visited the monastery (chilled with a nun), and grabbed some lunch at a little cafĂ© in the main part of town. i should probably mention that peperoni pizza is not pePPeroni pizza. peperoni are bell peppers. definitely failed at that order. gaby and i both did actually. haha. kinda disappointing.

to commemorate the night before birth of the virgin mary, firenze holds an annual festival where all the children carry around lanterns they’ve made themselves with tissue paper (or even those they’ve purchased) in a procession throughout the city. called la festa della rificolona, it begins in the piazza santa croce through to piazza della signioria (where the palazzo vecchio is) to the duomo until it terminates in piazza santissima annunziata. the kids also shoot at each other with blowguns with little wax/clay pellets. yesm, i have one as a souvenir. in piazza annunziata, there are carts with weird black licorice-tasting chips, sugar-coated nuts, and other candies and about a million people. seren and i got up to the top of the main steps and we watched from the side as the cardinal addressed the crowd. a bunch of schoolchildren then sang traditional italian songs. so adorable. it was just this crazy celebration with everyone in florence and just made me that much more excited to be in this beautiful city!

for mary’s ACTUAL bday on tuesday, florence opens the duomo terrace to the public—gratis—for free. more amazing views coming our way. it was absolutely surreal being on top of that thing. akdjflakjadkjflka. amazing amazing amazing. i need to come up with some more creative adjectives.

class with marcello. phenom. hilarious little man. can’t wait to learn all about italy from this guy. he is seriously THE MAN.

just wanted to mention that i made gnocchi for dinner the other night. it was superb. i’m excellent at boiling water and cooking onions. and heating up bolognese sauce. mmhmm. i’ll make it for you if you come visitttt.

ooo here’s an experience i would love to share with you: nude figure drawing. not as awkward as you might think. oh wait, i already met the model. at his other job. as a dj for the pub 5 doors down from my house. so awesome.

don’t make eye contact. don’t make eye contact. don’t make eye contact.

but honestly it wasn’t horrible. it was actually very cool learning how to get the proportions correct on the human body. lot’s of things to think about fer sure.

tonight, patti smith (do you know who she is?) played outside santa croce. picture snape from harry potter (but a woman version) with long grayer hair. apparently she’s really popular? so popular that they had to block off all the entrances to the piazza and we had to walk around the whole world to get to my street. but nevertheless, it was really cool listening to a concert in santa croce while drawing the statue of dante alighieri (before they closed off the piazza).

also tonight, yoanna and i had a candlelight dinner date. delicious bulgarian food. i’m definitely coming over more often.

once we found our way back to via dei neri (my street) we chilled in front of the gelateria, studied up on some italiano for tomorrow’s quiz, and met christo’s new italian friends—roberta, georgia, massimo, and matias. they were so friendly, and hopefully will be our first real italian friends!! they spoke italian to us the whole time and surprisingly we understood it very well! excitingggg! i think we’re having dinner with them on monday night. woo wooooo. ok sleepy time.

ciao mi amici!! xo

PIAZZA MICH, CREPES, SAN MIN, AND BACK AGAIN, SOMEHOW...

last night we had everyone in the building over at our apartment before we headed out to the piazza michelangelo in the hopes of finding a place to DANCE.

even with 2 fans blowing in the kitchen, we still could not get cool. (i know i should probably stop complaining because when it starts to get cold, i’m gonna wish it were hot again!!) when we climbed up the hill to the piazza, we tried to find the disco. never in my life have i seen such a line to get into a club. and no amount of name-dropping could get us in. the line was just too ridiculous. yoanna promised to make everything better by her saturday morning crepe offer. BYOT. (bring your own toppings).

as promised, yoyo made delicious bulgarian crepes this morning. with some nutella we “borrowed” from the hotel and bananas from the local market, we had our crepe feast! YUM. now what to do to work off our breakfast? hike to galileo’s villa sounds amazing…

i don’t think the florentines know how lucky they are to be living in such a beautiful city. yoanna, gaby, kevin, christo, jason, and i went on a hunt for the villa. we ended up doing a hike south of the arno on the outskirts of florence with incredible views of the entire city. the walk took us past a fort from world war ii, the house in which tchaikovsky was born, grape trees?, fig trees, all the way to san miniato. views to DIE for. it gives me the chills. and somehow we ended up at the piazza michelangelo. no idea how.

tomorrow, i think we might row down the arno. yeah. no big deal.

mom, call me please?

xoxo

I <3 GELATO

FINALLY all moved in and it feels UH-MAY-ZING. i think i brought too much stuff, but it all fits pretty well considering. i wish i brought more photos though. i only have like five because i never got a chance to print them out before i left. sad face. send me pictures everyone!! oh that reminds me. if you want to send me anything, send it to school. the address is:

via g. leopardi 12
50121 firenze, italy

the mail is super ghetto here, so it can take months to receive it if you try sending it to my apartment. and if you want to send a big package (aka birthday present hint hint ;) ) make sure it says USED PERSONAL ITEMS with a value of like 10 – 20 bucks. or else the poliziotto will confiscate it!

last night, my roommates and i definitely achieved creeper status, spying on the cute half-naked, smoking, cooking italian boys living across the street from us. yes, they did finally notice us staring at them from the shadows of our kitchen and living room… but we were just trying to be friendly!  oh and by the way, our apartment building is entirely inhabited by the kids from our program—and 11 of us are architects. after our espionage mission, we went downstairs to mingle with our neighbs and played some intense card games with them. glad to have a bunch of archy’s in the vicinity.

did i mention how much i love gelato? i swear that place is open forever. so far i have tried/had cookies, tiramisu, nuts, nutella, chocolate chip, lemon, berry, and pistachio. not a single bad flavor flaaave. oh and the gelateria man almost had to help me break into my apartment last night because my key wasn’t working. he brought out a knife and everything. SO ready to do business on that door.  luckily we just realized that i am an idiot and i was using the wrong key (i swear i tried it!).

side note: the girls had a life drawing class for their studio art program and drew a live nude male model who just so happens to be the dj at club a block from our house! what are the odds? and won’t that be awk for him? haha we’ll see…

italian quiz tomorrow, kids. gotta go study uppp…

love until later,

lex

THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES...

one word. piazza michelangelo. i don’t care what issues you might think you have with climbing 500+ steps. you HAVE to go there. no joke. most amazing spot in florence. hands down. perfect for a romantic date. perfect for an unromantic date. perfect. just perfect. if you want breathtaking views, i will give you them. imagine the spectacularly lit duomo, palazzo vecchio, and santa croce emerging from a sea of hundreds and hundreds of red roofs like beacons in the florentine night. add a dance floor, some music, and some waltzers and you have the piazza michelangelo. incredible!!

we started italian class today. my roommates have the morning 9-12 class, and my class is from 1-4, but there is a good group of poly kids in my session, so i’m definitely not alone, and I met some cool people from other schools, too. our teacher annalisa is adorable—she barely speaks a word of english but enough to answer our questions decently. i think our whole class was surprised by the amount of italian we already knew (and also by the amount of italian we didn’t already know). i cannot wait to finally be able to converse with the italians!

move-in day is approaching! the five of us are so excited to finally have a place to unpack our exploding suitcases. and do laundry. and have ice in our water. (for some reason italians don’t mind living without ice you have to ask for dell’acqua con giaoco if you want ice water!). i have my own room up these stairs off the kitchen with a slanted ceiling and a little mini window and slanted closet doors. it is adorable! and hot! thank god for fans, right? it’s ok. i’ll be thrilled to have that heat in the winter, i’m sure.

that’s all for now. i’ll keep you posted if anything exciting happens!

ciao sensuale! ;)

p.s. i have yet to post pictures, i know, i know. the internet is crazy expensive right now (in the hotel), but when i move in, i will have unlimited access to the internet so i will upload as soon as i can!

I'M HERE!

buon giorno principeschi!!

i hope you weren’t worrying your pretty little heads about me because two in-flight movies, three ginger-ales, one chicken dinner, and half a book later, i landed in roma, safe and sound. they weren’t kidding when they said it was hot and humid here in italy.  i don’t care what you say, but there is just no way i can dress like these insane italians in their long sleeves and jeans in this 90 degree 1004% humidity weather. no matter how many italians check me out, i’m wearing shorts for christ’s sake!

on the second leg of our trip, jason, max, and i found alyssa two rows ahead of us, and we met two awesome girls from san diego state, seren and sarah.  we all dragged about 1000 pounds of luggage from the airport to the train station by the airport from which we took a 45 min long train ride to central rome and then another two hour ride to florence.

once in florence, we took a cab to the hotel meridiana and seren, sarah, and i got a room together.  a bunch of us then figured we would explore the city [amazing. please hold for pictures to come] and grab some lunch (and some vino), and around 3-ish, the exhaustion started taking over. we practically fell asleep against the triumphant arch at the piazza de la liberta but made it back to the hotel just in time for a little afternoon siesta before dinner. dinner was pretty horrible, but maybe it was just the delirium kickin in… and we were so tired we didn’t even really care. it was sleep time for sure after that. i was so proud of us for making it through til night and none of us really felt jet-lagged the next day! benissimo!

on friday, the whole crew walked to the csu campus, and we met the staff. everyone seemed super helpful and nice. the day got even better when we decided that searching for apartments in the heat of the day would be a good idea. i don’t really recall how many places we saw, but my feet hated me, and i basically ended up walking the dirty streets of florence barefoot for two miles. sick. i know. tell me about it. nothing a good scrubbing and a gallon of extra strength prescription neosporin-type stuff couldn’t handle. we didn’t make any decisions about living anywhere just yet, but we definitely got a better handle on the city.

that night, we trekked back down to il centro, and stopped in this bierria—murphy’s pub. definitely the most american bar in the city. probably the entire country. beer pong tournaments, american hip hop music, and mtv on 10 different screens. it actually surprised me when italians started showing up. seren, sarah and i met some italian boys outside and we tried practicing our italian.  i’m not as lost as i thought i would be with this language, but i definitely have a waaayyyys to go.

when we’d had enough of murphy’s, we ventured out to the duomo and just chilled on the steps with 20 other csu kids. i can’t begin to describe how surreal it was to be sitting on the front steps of one of the most architecturally and historically significant buildings on the planet. absolutely surreal.

seren and i found some more italians to talk to and they ended up taking us and all of our friends to this bar called “fish pub.” i needed some back up from my boys because these italians are ruthless!

maxpretendyou’remyboyfriendanddancewithmethisguyisfreakingmeout!!

but we all made it back to the hotel just fine. what an amazing night. i love this city!!

today, we went on another house hunt. the walk through il centro was incredible. the city is so full of life! we saw about 6 or 7 places and ended up choosing the first one we saw that day. a 3 bedroom 2 bath on via dei neri across the cobblestone street from a gelateria—yeah you know we are becoming bff with the owners a-sap—on the fifth floor literally one block from the uffizi and palazzo vecchio, 4 blocks north of the arno river! the location is to die for and we are so excited!! operation find-place-to-live: success. oh and we all have phones. it’s free for me if you wanna call! ha.

well that’s all for now i suppose. tomorrow we’re probably going to do a walking tour of florence with refugio, one of the heads of staff at the campus. more walking. suuuper. ;)

FINAL DAYS BEFORE DEPARTURE

as expected, the past 10 days have literally FLOWN by. i leave in 24 hours, and my bags are finally packed with not a pound to spare, thanks to the incredibly efficient "rolling technique" copyright lmm, superboss. i know, i know, i should probably reconsider some of the stuff i'm taking... have mom send it maybe? (or not take it at all). the "solution" of taking things out and transferring them to my carry-on only works when my dad is my pack animal. but dad's not coming to florence, and falling over from an overweight hiking backpack isn't really all that fun, especially when you're lugging 2 suitcases behind you.

oh wellll. i'm sure everything will work itself out somehow. i just cannot wait to be cruisin' into the train station in florence, seeing the poly kids, and getting ready for la via bella in firenze! i'm already starting to regret only getting through two units of lesson one rosetta stone. hmm... that's what phrase books are for, right?

the next time i wirte, i'll be abroad, kids. don't miss me too much!!

ciao!!

I LOVE PACKING

yeah, you know i'm lying.

packing is the WORST. i want to bring everything, i obviously can't, and i hate making decisions about which pair of jeans i have to leave behind. not to mention that this is an entire year's supply of everything i can't live without all crammed into no more than two suitcases and a carry-on. uhh, that's how much i usually pack in my car for spring break... hopefully TSA overlooks the fact that both my bags are over 50 pounds and that my carry-on definietly will not fit into an overhead bin?? i'm crossin' my fingers.

and then of course there's the issue of lost luggage! ok, knock on wood. but with a connection in montreal and another in rome... oy! i don't even want to think about it.

THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS...
